Maple Class – Investigators Department
Welcome to Maple Class!
We are part of the Investigators Department and follow an informal curriculum, where learning is centred around sensory exploration, communication, physical development, independence, and emotional wellbeing. We have a topic for each term and our activities are carefully planned to be meaningful, enjoyable, and accessible, enabling pupils to learn through play, exploration, and real-life experiences. We work hard within the five areas of the Engagement Model: exploration, realisation, anticipation, persistence, and initiation. Through a range of sensory-rich activities, music, stories and creative experiences, pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning.
We know that we learn best when our sensory, emotional and physical needs are met and therefore we prioritise this continually throughout the day. We place great importance on building positive relationships and creating a safe, happy classroom where everyone feels valued and understood. Communication is at the heart of everything we do, supporting learners to express themselves, interact with others, and develop their understanding of the world around them. We adopt a 'total communication' approach, using a wide variety of approaches within the classroom, including eye-gaze, switches, symbols, Makaton signs and yes/no bands.
All pupils make progress through our Rainbow Profile and we pride ourselves in working really hard towards our EHCP and Golden Thread targets. We also particularly enjoy developing our physical skills through Rebound and Hydrotherapy sessions. We are encouraged to be kind to our friends and staff both in the classroom and around school, as well as being as independent as we possibly can to prepare us for our future.
Every day in our class is filled with opportunities for learners to explore, connect, and thrive and we have lots of fun together as we work towards reaching our full potential.
